Frequently Asked Questions
How easy is it to install? How long does it take?
Installation typically takes less than 20 minutes per kit. All of our precut films
are designed for solo DIY. Whenever possible, it's best to have a second
person help you position the film on the windshield. Squeegeeing can be done
completely solo.
Can I install XSHIELD films myself?
Yes! XSHIELD films are designed for easy installation by crew members. Our pre-cut
kits eliminate the need for custom cutting, and we provide detailed installation
guides with every order. Watch our

What's the difference between TPU and polyester films?
Our 1-layer TPU film is a durable thermoplastic urethane that installs without heat
shrinking, making it ideal for quick applications. The 2-layer and 4-layer polyester
films are tear-off systems designed for longer sessions — simply peel away a
layer when visibility is compromised to instantly reveal a fresh, clear surface
underneath.
How do I remove and replace tear-off layers?
Tear-off layers are designed to be removed quickly during pit stops or between
sessions. Simply grip the edge of the top layer and pull it away from the windshield.
The next layer underneath will be ready to go immediately. Detailed instructions are
included with every multi-layer kit.
How do I clean and maintain XSHIELD?
The best option is a soap and water handwash only. Avoid Windex or any alcohol-based
cleaners. Alcohol and similar chemical cleaners will degrade or damage the film.
How long does XSHIELD last?
We recommend removing or replacing a layer every 6 months for best results, although
our films can last longer depending on where and how you drive as well as your care
and maintenance routines.
Do you offer custom sizes or shapes?
Yes! While we stock pre-cut and pre-shrunk kits for many popular racing vehicles, we
also sell material by the sheet for custom applications. Contact us with your vehicle
specifications, and we can help determine the best solution for your needs.
What installation tools do I need?
For 1-layer TPU film, you'll need basic tools like a squeegee and spray bottle with
soapy water. For 2-layer and 4-layer systems, a heat gun is required for proper
shrinking. We sell complete installation tool kits with everything you need.
How does it hold up against windshield wipers?
Our films are designed to resist micro scratches from wiper blades, but we still
recommend having clean or new wipers installed. For the best possible results, we
recommend using silicone-based wiper blades and replacing them per the
manufacturer's schedule.
Does the film affect visibility?
XSHIELD products are optically clear. Perfect, undetectable visibility depends
heavily on the install quality. Dry spots, insufficient soap, or stretching of the
film during install can cause minor distortion, so a clean, well-executed install is
key.
Do I need to have a friend help me install it?
No, but having an extra set of hands for the placement of the film onto the
windshield is beneficial, though not required for a proper installation.
I'm not comfortable installing it myself. Can I take it to a shop?
Absolutely. XSHIELD is built for easy DIY application, but if you'd rather not
install it yourself, any window tint shop with film experience can do it for you.
How do I store the film if I'm not installing it right away?
Keep it in its original packaging, especially for longer-term storage, to protect it
before installation.
What if my windshield already has pitting or damage?
XSHIELD will still install as intended, but it won't repair or hide existing damage.
Once installed, it'll protect the windshield from further damage.
How long after installation can I drive my car?
For the best results, wait until the next day before driving.
How long after install can I clean my windshield or use my wipers?
Wait about 1 hour before cleaning (ammonia-free cleaners only), 24 hours before any
rain exposure, and 3–5 days before the first wash.
How do I remove the film?
Peel it like a Command Strip. Pull parallel to the windshield surface toward your
body, not up and away from the windshield like vinyl stickers. Removing it the wrong
way can leave adhesive residue behind.
I noticed tunneling when I opened the package, should I be concerned?
No, go ahead and install it. If tunneling is still visible 24 hours after install,
reach out and we'll take care of a replacement.
How well does this protect my windshield?
XSHIELD reduces everyday impacts and eliminates pitting from typical road debris.
It's a protection film, but it's not indestructible, so large impacts can still cause
damage.
Should I replace my wipers before installing?
Yes, we recommend fresh, clean, silicone-based wiper blades before install.
What's the optimal temperature for installation?
Room temperature (between 65°F – 77°F) works best.
Can I install if I have Rain-X or a ceramic coating on my windshield?
The glass needs to be bare for proper adhesion, so any hydrophobic coatings (Rain-X,
ceramic, etc.) should be fully removed before install.
Can I reposition the film if I don't apply it correctly the first time?
Yes, but you only have a couple of minutes before the adhesive begins to cure. You
need to reposition quickly with a generous amount of soapy water under the film,
before you start squeegeeing.
How much pressure should I use when squeegeeing?
Use firm pressure on your first pass, then a bit more pressure on the second pass to
push out remaining moisture. Avoid leaning your full body weight into the squeegee
— too much force can shift the film or, in rare cases, stress the windshield.
